It all started in Grandma Lota’s kitchen. Lota is Sharon’s sweet mom who made the fanciest of cakes for all four of her kid’s birthdays. Grandma eventually progressed to making all of the food and the wedding cakes for her kid’s weddings. My mom, Sharon, was always helping in the kitchen and developed a few skills just from helping her mom.
In 2002, my Grandma was assigned to make my cousin’s wedding cake. She made all of the gum paste roses by herself and was ready to put them on the cake when my family and I arrived a bit early to help set up the final wedding details. Grandma decided that I was old enough to arrange the flowers on the cake. After all, I was twelve at the time. Something sparked that day and I realized how fun cake decorating could be! I would post a picture of me next to the cake but I had just hit puberty and we definitely didn’t get along.
As a kid, I would watch Betty Crocker’s cake decorating video and Bob Ross on t.v. almost every day. Yeah…I know….I’m a 90s girl. I have been an artist since before I can remember and making cakes, invitations, and paintings has been the greatest creative outlet.
My mom and I started slow in 2002 with a few cakes here and there for family and friends. Once we became more comfortable with our skills, I started this blog to see if we could pull in a few more weddings. We have made hundreds of cakes ever since! Sharon and I are the perfect cake making duo. Neither one of us could do it without the other. Occasionally, Grandma Lota will come watch us in the kitchen. She is wonderful to have around because everything we do is “just lovely”. Nothing boosts our confidence more.
Sweet Lota passed away on August 4, 2015 – we think of her every time we bake.
